The demented Twitter troll in the West Wing is having another meltdown. It began last night with an all-caps threat to Iran and continued this morning with a high pitched, Fox News-fueled demand to end the “Mueller Witch Hunt” blah blah blah. In normal times, there would be three or four posts up on this topic. In these times, it’s just another Monday. Good lord, having a crazy person in the White House is exhausting. Let’s speak of other things. I am back home after a long weekend in Savannah, …

The White House Needs to Knock Back Putin’s Offer of Assistance in Exchange for Interviewing/Investigating Ambassador McFaul, Several Other US Officials, and Bill Browder

One of the strange things at the President’s joint press conference with Vladimir Putin in Helsinki was the President’s references to an offer of assistance from Putin to Special Counsel Mueller. Specifically that Putin would be happy to allow the Special Counsel’s investigators come to Russia and observe his own counterintelligence officers interview the twelve GRU officers that were indicted last week. Aside from the fact that this would be pointless, which we know because the Brits actually took Putin up on a similar offer when they were investigating Alexander …

Here’s the live feed for the President’s news conference with Putin at the end of their Helsinki summit. ETA: I’ve been away from the news most of the morning and am just now getting caught up. I think the real concern with the Helsinki meetings, as was the case with the Singapore summit with Kim Jong Un, is that we will only find out what the President said or agreed to in the one on one when either he tells us or when Putin does. Don’t expect as much premium announcement shock for the midterms (V2)

In Election 2018, Election 2020, Mayhew On Insurance by David Anderson

Three weeks before the midterms Democrats should not expect to see nationwide headlines of 15% or 20% or 25% rate increases on the Exchanges.  There will be some states and some insurers with those types of rate increases, but there will be a number of insurers with either “normal” increases of less than 10% or actual rate decreases. If insurers priced perfectly for 2018, we would expect the following factors to drive premiums for 2019: Normal Medical utilization (+7%) Repeal of the health insurance premium tax (-3%) Repeal of the …

Expect big MLR checks in the fall of 2019

In Election 2020, Mayhew On Insurance by David Anderson

Many individual market buyers in several states should expect to see surprising checks in the fall of 2019. These will be Medical Loss Ratio (MLR) rebate checks. Insurers are required to spend, on a three year rolling average, 80% of the premium dollars on claims and quality improvement expenses. If they spend more than that, that is fine. If they spend less than 80%, the isnurers need to cut checks to their policy holders. Over the past couple of years, there have not been large checks cut as insurers weren’t …
