Sometimes I think it’s going to be really hard to explain this era to people in the future and then I think, oh please let it be really hard to explain. I hope it makes no sense. — Jon Lovett (@jonlovett) July 23, 2018   Now we just have the Media Village Idiots, doing their best to make news Silly (even Stupid) all year ’round. The Senate has had a busy day. First, Senators Scott (R-SC) and Rubio (R-FL) temporarily allied with a unified Democratic caucus to assemble a minimum blocking coalition to a nominee for a lifetime appointment on the 9th Circuit Court: JUST NOW: On the Senate floor, McConnell withdrew Ryan Bounds judicial nomination from the floor vote for further consideration because @SenatorTimScott said he needed more time to review his record in light of racist views that we flagged in February. https://t.co/83MMeQQjkg — Legal Defense Fund (@NAACP_LDF) July 19, 2018 And then …

That Plutonium In San Antonio And Live Stream Putin-Trump Press Conference

A couple of reporters who take their job to be spreading maximum fear about nuclear radiation have found a story in San Antonio, Texas. Staff from Idaho National Laboratory were picking up cesium and plutonium sources from a laboratory and left them in their rental car overnight. The car was broken into and the sources and other equipment stolen. That was carelessness and should be looked at in the light of other careless incidents in the DOE system. When I’m traveling, I always bring in anything from the car that …

With Trump and his Trumpkins — aka the entire Republican power structure — the extremes of grotesque behavior serve a purpose: in the disgust they evoke, they distract us from the point of the whole exercise.  That would be, of course, extracting as much cash as possible through the exercise of arbitrary power. Today’s example — actually, now about a week old — comes from griftmonger supreme Scott Pruitt.  All the grandiose corruption, stiffing aids for hotel rooms, buying a Maxwell Smart cone of silence, unobtanium-infused skin cream and the …

Interesting Read: “Tim Berners-Lee, the Man Who Created the World Wide Web, Has Some Regrets”

I’m counting on all you tech wizards to explain how and where this all goes wrong, but *I* thought it was interesting. Katrina Brooker, in Vanity Fair: “For people who want to make sure the Web serves humanity, we have to concern ourselves with what people are building on top of it,” Tim Berners-Lee told me one morning in downtown Washington, D.C., about a half-mile from the White House. Berners-Lee was speaking about the future of the Internet, as he does often and fervently and with great animation at a …

How Long Would It Take To *Cough* End North Korea’s Nuclear Weapons Program?

In All we want is life beyond the thunderdome, Foreign Affairs, Nuclear Stuff by Cheryl Rofer

Observe how gracefully I avoided the unclear word denuclearization by saying what I mean. Another area of disagreement is in how long it would take to remove North Korea’s nuclear weapons and eliminate or repurpose the facilities that develop and build them. And we don’t know what North Korea thinks about that. John Bolton estimated that it would take a year. The Institute for Science and International Security estimates 30 months. A study by Siegfried Hecker, Robert Carlin, and Elliot Serbin at Stanford’s Center for International Security and Cooperation estimates …

Nothing Means Anything, Chapter 715

In All we want is life beyond the thunderdome, Dolt 45, Foreign Affairs, Nuclear Stuff by Cheryl Rofer

There are two very different narratives of what is happening in the negotiations with North Korea. As Kim Jong Un promised in his New Year’s Day address, North Korea is building up its capacity to manufacture nuclear weapons and the missiles they might ride on. In the past week, we have seen evidence from the national intelligence agencies and independent analysts that there are at least two clandestine uranium enrichment plants, a missile manufacturing plant is being expanded, and related production is being expanded. This narrative is held …
